I’ve written before about why politics matter when it comes to health care and the recent Republican Party attack on contraceptives reinforces my belief that if you want better health care in the United States that it’s essential to vote against the Republican Party in every single election that is held.
The creation of an “Obama’s War on Religion” meme is the political reasoning behind this sudden interest in an issue that most of us thought was settled long ago. It’s a political distraction. 99% of women have used contraceptives yet the Republicans are acting like it’s a controversial issue that has anything at all to do with religious freedom? It’s absurd.
It shows once again that the Republican Party is willing to sabotage the quality of health care in this country just for what they see as a political opportunity.
War on Religion?
The right wing is trying to twist their war on women’s health into a “War on Religion” coming from President Obama but that is quite clearly nonsense when you consider the following:
1. A similar law requiring contraception coverage is already in place in 28 states.
2. The Catholic Church was against the Iraq War. Why wasn’t it considered a “War on Religion” when George W. Bush and the rest of the Republican Party pushed for that? And why were Catholics forced to pay taxes that were spent on a war that the Pope considered unjust?
3. The Catholic Church is for universal health care coverage yet Rick Santorum and the rest of the Republican Party has been steadfast in their opposition to “ObamaCare.” Why is that not a “War on Religion” as well?
4. 58% of women use birth control for reasons other than contraception.
5. If Catholic employers are allowed to deny their employees health care coverage based on their own personal religious beliefs then what about Scientologist employers who don’t believe in psychiatry? What Christian Science employers who don’t believe in modern health care whatsoever? Where is the line drawn?
The answer that last question is quite obvious if you understand the constitution; Religion has no place at all in a debate regarding health care. No particular religion shall influence government policy in this way. People have freedom of religion but they also have freedom from religion.
When Republicans try to force a particular religious belief into government policy this is a despicable version of “big government” at work.
